Etymology
assistance は、中英語期にフランス語の assistance から借用された。フランス語の assistance は、ラテン語の assistere（そばに立つ、助ける）に由来し、assistere は ad-（そばに）と sistere（立つ）から成る。
Analysis
元々は「そばに立つこと」という具体的な意味から、転じて「人を助ける行為」を表すようになった。現代英語では、物理的な手助けから経済的・行政的な支援まで幅広く用いられる。
