These terms apply to your use of the OpenEtymology website at openetymology.com. By using the website, you agree to them. If you do not agree, please do not use the website.

Using the website

You may use OpenEtymology for personal study, teaching and research. You may quote short passages with a link to the entry.

You may not:

  • copy, scrape or download the dictionary in bulk, or use automated tools to collect its content;
  • republish substantial parts of the content as your own dictionary, word list or dataset;
  • interfere with the website’s operation, security or anti-abuse controls;
  • use the website in a way that breaks the law.

We may limit or block access that appears automated or abusive.

Content and ownership

The website’s text, entry structure, visual design and software are owned by OpenEtymology or used under licence. The word-book files published in our public GitHub repository are released under CC BY-SA 4.0, as stated in that repository. That licence does not extend to the full dictionary on this website.

If you believe material on the website infringes your rights, see the contact page.

Educational content

OpenEtymology is an educational resource. Definitions, word histories and word-part explanations may contain errors or simplifications, and some etymologies are uncertain or disputed. See the Disclaimer for details.

The website may show advertising served by Google and its partners, as described in the Privacy Policy. Advertisements and links to other websites are not endorsements. We are not responsible for the content or practices of other websites.

Availability

We provide the website free of charge and may change, suspend or remove any part of it at any time without notice.

No warranty and limitation of liability

The website is provided “as is” and “as available”, without warranties of any kind, to the extent permitted by law. We do not guarantee that content is complete, accurate or suitable for any particular purpose, such as examinations or professional use.

To the extent permitted by law, OpenEtymology is not liable for any loss or damage arising from your use of, or reliance on, the website. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law.
