Etymology
extinguisher は、動詞 extinguish（消す）に行為者を表す接尾辞 -er が付いた語です。extinguish はラテン語 exstinguere（消す、絶えさせる）に由来し、フランス語を経由して英語に入りました。
Analysis
元々は「火を消す人」という意味でしたが、後に「火を消す道具」、特に現代では「消火器」を指すのが一般的になりました。接尾辞 -er が「人」だけでなく「道具」も表すようになった例です。
