Etymology
ギリシャ語の mastos（乳房）と -itis（炎症）が組み合わさってできた医学用語で、19世紀に英語に入った。
Analysis
mastos（乳房）に炎症を意味する -itis が付き、文字通り「乳房の炎症」を指す。現代では主に牛などの家畜の乳腺炎を指すが、人間の乳腺炎にも用いられる。
