Etymology
adoptive は、ラテン語の adoptare（ad-「〜へ」+ optare「選ぶ」）に由来し、フランス語の adoptif を経て英語に入った。元々は「養子にされた」という意味で、後に「養子縁組に関する」という意味も持つようになった。
