Etymology
ラテン語の destructio（破壊）に由来し、これは destruere（破壊する）の名詞形です。destruere は接頭辞 de-（下へ、離れて）と struere（建てる）から成り、「建てたものを崩す」という意味でした。フランス語を経由して14世紀に英語に入りました。
Analysis
元々は「建物を解体する」という具体的な行為を指していましたが、次第に「組織や物事を台無しにする」という抽象的な意味に拡張されました。現代では物理的な破壊から比喩的な破滅まで幅広く使われます。
