Etymology
earthenwareは、古英語のeorþe（土）に由来するearthと、古英語のwaru（商品、品物）に由来するwareが組み合わさった語です。中英語期にearthen wareとして現れ、土で作られた器を指すようになりました。
Analysis
元々は「土で作られた製品」という意味で、陶器全般を指していましたが、現代では特に素焼きの陶器を指すことが多いです。earthenは「土の」という形容詞で、wareは「製品」を意味し、組み合わせることで「土製の器物」という意味が生まれました。
