Etymology
ラテン語の explanare（平らにする、説明する）に由来し、その派生語 explanatorius を経て、英語には16世紀頃に形容詞として取り入れられた。
Analysis
元々は「平らにする」という物理的な意味から「わかりやすくする」という抽象的な意味へ発展し、現代では「説明のための」という形容詞として定着した。
