Etymology
percentage は、近代ラテン語の per centum（百ごとに）に由来し、フランス語の pourcentage を経て英語に入った。もともとは「100分のいくつ」という割合を表す表現だった。
Analysis
per centum が「100ごとに」という意味で、それが名詞化されて「百分率」という概念を表すようになった。現代では、単に割合や比率を表す一般的な語としても使われる。
