Etymology
unpromising は、接頭辞 un-（否定）と形容詞 promising（有望な）から成る。promising は、動詞 promise（約束する、見込みを示す）の現在分詞に由来し、promise はラテン語 promittere（前方に送る、約束する）から来ている。
Analysis
元々は「約束する」という意味の promise から、転じて「将来の成功や良い結果を示す」という意味の promising が生まれ、それに否定の un- が付くことで「良い結果を示さない、見込みがない」という意味になった。
