Etymology
中英語の defiaunt を経て、古フランス語の defiant（現在分詞）から。古フランス語の defier は「挑戦する、反抗する」を意味し、ラテン語の dis-（離れて）と fīdus（信頼できる）に由来する。
Analysis
元々は「信頼を置かない」という意味から「挑戦する」「反抗する」へと発展した。現代英語では、権威や規則に対して従わず、はっきりと反対の態度を示す様子を表す。
