Etymology
equivalence は、ラテン語の aequus（等しい）と valere（強い、価値がある）に由来し、フランス語の équivalence を経由して英語に入った。元々は「同等の価値を持つこと」を意味した。
Analysis
equivalence は「等しい価値」という概念から、数学や論理学では「同値」、科学では「等価」、日常では「同等性」を表すようになった。接頭辞 equi- と語根 -valence の組み合わせが、現代の意味を直接反映している。
