Etymology
ラテン語の aestimatio（評価、見積もり）に由来し、動詞 aestimare（評価する）から派生した。フランス語の estimation を経由して中英語に入った。
Analysis
元々は「価値の評価」という意味で、後に「数量や程度の見積もり」という意味に広がった。また、人に対する「尊重」という意味も古くから存在し、現在ではやや文語的・古風な用法として残っている。
