Etymology
ラテン語の intersectio（交差）に由来し、inter（間に）と secare（切る）から成る。フランス語を経由して英語に入った。
Analysis
元々は「切り込む」という意味から、二つの線や道が互いに切り合う「交差」を指すようになった。数学では集合の共通部分を意味するように拡張された。
