Etymology
ラテン語の proportio（比率、釣り合い）に由来し、これは pro（前に、代わりに）と portio（部分、割り当て）から成ります。フランス語の proportion を経由して中英語に入りました。
Analysis
元々は「部分を前に置く」という意味から、各部分の関係や釣り合いを表すようになりました。現代では、数量の比率や全体の中での部分の割合、また美的な均衡を指すようになりました。
