Etymology
signage は、英語の sign（標識）に接尾辞 -age が付いた語で、-age はフランス語を経由してラテン語の -aticum に由来し、集合名詞や行為・状態を表す。sign 自体はラテン語の signum（印、しるし）に遡る。
Analysis
元々は「標識の集合」という意味で、20世紀に商業や交通の分野で「標識・看板の総称」として使われるようになった。現代では、店舗や公共施設の案内表示など、視覚的な情報伝達のためのサイン全般を指す。
