Etymology
中英語の notwithstonding に由来し、not + with + standing の組み合わせ。もともとは「〜に反対して立たない」という意味で、14世紀に使われ始めた。
Analysis
「not withstanding」は「〜が立ちはだかっても、それに屈しない」というイメージから、「〜にもかかわらず」という譲歩の意味に発展した。前置詞として使う場合は目的語を伴い、副詞として使う場合は文全体を修飾する。
