Etymology
decay は、古フランス語の decair（衰える、落ちる）を経て、中英語に取り入れられた。古フランス語の decair は、ラテン語の decadere（落ちる、衰える）に由来し、これは de-（下へ）と cadere（落ちる）から成る。
Analysis
元々は「落ちる」という物理的な意味から、「状態が低下する」「腐敗する」という抽象的な意味へと拡張した。現代英語では、有機物の腐敗や、建物・制度などの衰退を表す。
