Etymology
ラテン語の finis（終わり）に由来し、形容詞形 finalis（終わりの）を経て、中英語期にフランス語の final から英語に入った。
Analysis
元々は「終わりに関する」という意味だったが、そこから「最後の」という意味が生まれ、さらに名詞として「最後の試験」や「決勝戦」を指すようになった。
