Etymology
ギリシャ語のperi（周り）とskopein（見る）が組み合わさってできた語で、19世紀初頭に英語に入った。当初は「周囲を見るための装置」という意味で使われた。
Analysis
元々は「周りを見る」という意味のギリシャ語要素から作られたが、特に潜水艦用の潜望鏡を指すようになり、現代では主にその意味で用いられる。
