Etymology
接頭辞 'under-'（下に、不十分に）と動詞 'estimate'（見積もる）の組み合わせ。'estimate' はラテン語の 'aestimare'（評価する、見積もる）に由来し、16世紀に英語に入った。
Analysis
元々は「低く見積もる」という文字通りの意味で使われていたが、比喩的に「能力や価値を過小評価する」という意味に拡張された。現代では、数値的な見積もりだけでなく、人の能力や物事の重要性を軽く見る場合にも広く用いられる。
