Etymology
portray は、中英語の portraien を経て、古フランス語の portraire から来ています。portraire は、ラテン語の pro-（前方へ）と trahere（引く）が組み合わさった言葉で、「前方に引き出す」という意味がありました。
Analysis
元々は「絵を描く」という具体的な行為を指していましたが、後に「言葉で描写する」という抽象的な意味に広がり、さらに演劇や映画で「役を演じる」という意味も持つようになりました。
