Etymology
ラテン語の affluere（ad-「～へ」+ fluere「流れる」）に由来し、「流れ込む」という意味から、中世ラテン語の affluentia を経て、14世紀に英語に入った。当初は「豊富な流れ」を意味した。
Analysis
元々は「流れ込むこと」を指していたが、そこから「豊富に流れ込むもの」、特に富や資源が豊かにある状態を表すようになった。現代では主に経済的な豊かさや裕福さを意味する。
