Etymology
ラテン語の distorsio（ねじれ、ゆがみ）に由来し、これは動詞 distorquere（ねじり曲げる）から派生した。distorquere は dis-（離れて）と torquere（ねじる）から成る。英語には14世紀頃にフランス語を経由して入った。
Analysis
元々は物理的な「ねじり曲げる」という意味だったが、後に比喩的に「事実や意味をゆがめる」という意味に拡張された。現代では、音や画像のひずみ、統計や情報の歪曲など、幅広い分野で使われる。
