Etymology
ラテン語の subtrahere（下から引き抜く、取り除く）に由来し、sub-（下に）と trahere（引く）から成る。英語には16世紀に「引き算する」という数学用語として取り入れられた。
Analysis
元々は「下から引き抜く」という物理的な動作を意味していたが、数学の分野で「ある数から別の数を引く」という抽象的な意味に転じた。現代では主に算数・数学の文脈で用いられる。
